Position Description

We're Hiring: Oncology Nurse Navigator

Position Overview:

The Thoracic Oncology Nurse Navigator will manage the daily operations of the Low-Dose CT (LDCT) Lung Cancer Screening Program within the Division of Thoracic Surgery . This role is approximately 90% screening program management and 10% clinical support, focusing on providing compassionate, patient-centered care while ensuring operational efficiency for the lung cancer screening program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the prescreening program for lung cancer screening, including contacting patients, conducting eligibility screening, and scheduling CT scans.
  • Perform all prescreening and screening for the LDCT program, receiving referrals via hotline, EMR (Epic), and direct provider referrals.
  • Conduct Shared Decision-Making (SDM) counseling when not completed by the referring provider.
  • Offer and arrange smoking cessation counseling when appropriate.
  • Place LDCT scan orders and schedule exams within allotted program slots.
  • Ensure test results are sent to referring providers and patients promptly.
  • Review high-risk cases (Lung-RADS 3 or 4) with the Chief of Thoracic Surgery or designee for follow-up planning.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records and program data for quality tracking and reporting.
  • Occasionally assist on the clinical side, ensuring patients are prepared for surgery and helping them navigate additional required visits.
  • Support community outreach initiatives for the lung cancer screening program as needed.
  • Assist the Clinical Nurse Navigator and Division staff as appropriate.
  • Support the vision, mission, and values of GW Medicine while maintaining a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.

Qualifications:

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington DC.
  • BSN.
  • Experience in oncology preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of lung cancer screening guidelines and patient education.
  • Proficiency with Epic EMR and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and patient advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care, safety, and quality improvement.
